Services
The cost of the following services depends on the size of your site and how much work it needs. Contact me for a detailed quote.
Site report
A site report is usually the first step towards improving your website. In it, I provide an analysis of:
- content: Is it well written for the web? Is the grammar and spelling correct? Does it make sense?
- structure: Is the content divided up appropriately? Do links and navigation labels help a visitor to find what they are looking for?
- standards: Is the code valid and efficient? Will it work on a range of browsers? Is the site accessible to people with disabilities?
The site report gives you an idea of the size of the task ahead, and includes recommendations for action.
Site copy edit
Whereas I may only look at a sample of your site to develop the site report, in carrying out a copy edit I review every page in detail. A copy edit of your site identifies:
- specific errors in spelling and grammar
- errors in links – both the words of the link and the target (where it goes)
- inconsistencies in spelling, punctuation and capitalisation (you are writing for an international audience: are you using Australian or United States conventions?)
- invalid, inefficient or obsolete code.
If you do not already have a house style guide which specifies details such as when to use capital letters, how to spell particular words and how to punctuate lists, I will provide this as part of the copy edit. If you do have a house style guide, I may recommend changes.
A copy edit does not include a detailed review of the structure of your site: that is undertaken in a structural edit.
Accessibility edit
An accessibility edit identifies difficulties which people with various disabilities may experience in using your site. (If you don't think this is important, read my article Access all areas.) It identifes:
- content which is inaccessible due to its format (for example, Macromedia® Flash™ and Adobe® PDF create specific challenges)
- code which fails to provide essential clues about the nature and structure of the content
- elements which create barriers for people with disabilities (for example, a tiny image which a visitor needs to click on to move from one step of a process to the next).
Structural edit
In carrying out a structural edit, I analyse of all your site's content to find out whether it is organised and written in the best way: that is, the one which will be most effective in helping your visitors to do what they have come to your site to do, whether they want to buy something, learn something or simply to be entertained.
